I was born Mary Ruth Kueck
in Somerville, Texas. At the age of 6 I moved to Hearne,
Texas, where I grew up and have lived most of my life. I
married Larry Burkhalter and raised a daughter and a son
and now have five wonderful Grandchildren. I have lived
the last 28 years of my life as a Pastor’s wife and have
had many wonderful experiences.
My appreciation of art was first awakened by my seventh
grade art teacher who urged my mother to enroll me in
art class. I was a very shy child and refused the idea.
It was some 40 years later before I got around to
enrolling in an oil painting class. My life has not been
the same since. I have always been involved in some area
of artistic expression. I was a hair stylist for many
years, and I later owned a Craft shop where I did of
acrylic painting on every imaginable surface from chairs
to weathered boards to wooden angels to clothes. I have
been a professional cake decorator/baker for the last 22
years. I began cake decorating because I enjoyed drawing
pictures on cakes. I received a Brownie camera for my
13th Birthday and since then have always had a camera
near by. I have been photographing the beauty of God’s
creation and now have the joy of bringing it to canvas.
With a few brush strokes you can express things that are
impossible with words.
Since I have come into the art world later in life, I
have no formal art education. In the last few years I
have taken classes from landscape artist Russell Cushman
and internationally know artist Vie Dunn-Harr. I have
attended numerous oil painting workshops and seminars in
order to acquire all the knowledge of art that I
possibly can. I have a strong desire to express the
beauty around us through my art. I primarily paint
floral and landscape. To capture the beauty of a flower
on canvas brings me great pleasure. I find that a day
can pass as though it were only a moment in time when I
sit at a canvas with brush in hand.
My desire is to bring joy to the life of others by the
beauty and serenity that I express on the canvas. I hope
that others can receive as much pleasure from viewing
one of my paintings as I received from painting it.
